Long Island New York Donor Egg Program- Recipient Information

The mission of the Donor-Egg Program at the Center for Human Reproduction, part of the North Shore LIJ Health System, is to help couples unable to conceive from their own eggs have a baby through the help of an egg donor.

Candidates for donor eggs include:

  1. Women of older reproductive age (typically mid to late forties).
  2. Younger women whose ovaries fail prematurely for an unknown reason or as a result of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination.
  3. Women who were born without functioning ovaries.
  4. Women with certain genetic disorders.

Women are born with thousands of eggs within their ovaries, enough to last an entire reproductive lifetime. Each month during a normal ovulatory cycle, one or sometimes more, of these eggs are ovulated. As women age their eggs begin to loose their ability to fertilize and develop, ultimately resulting in the menopause where the eggs can no longer produce a pregnancy.

Fertility programs continue to report an overall increase in the number of women who are candidates for their donor egg programs. Many women are waiting until later in life to establish their families.  This is sometimes due to the desire to establish their careers before having children and marrying at older ages.

The biologic fertility processes don’t “match” these societal changes and the result is an overall increase in infertility especially in women age 35 or older.

Advanced age is not the only reason a woman may need to use donor eggs. Some women experience premature menopause and their eggs can loose their viability much quicker than expected.  A woman may also experience ovarian failure for unknown reasons.  An elevated day three FSH level is a good indicator of reduced ovarian reserve.

We have numerous egg donors available to meet couples needs.  If you are interested in donating your eggs, please see our “Egg Donors” page. Sometimes a couple will provide their own donor which is termed a “known donor”.  The identity of donors selected from the donor pool will not be divulged beyond general physical characteristics, education, other pertinent personal information, and possibly a childhood picture.

Our Long Island New York donor egg program has conducted hundreds of successful donor egg cases.  Fortunately, donor egg success rates are equivalent to the egg donor’s age group.  For example, if the eggs of a 22 year old are used in a cycle with a 40 year old recipient, the success rates equal the 22 year old age group, which are typically high.

If you are considering a donor egg cycle you need to complete the egg donor recipient form. This form is posted on line for your convenience.
